Rear-locking Crown Drill (Drill Tip CD2000 / Drill Shank CDR-20-3D-C25)

A Crown Drill That Holds Grade 8-9 on Threaded Bottom Holes

This rear-locking crown drill pairs the replaceable CD2000 drill tip with the CDR-20-3D-C25 shank. It holds hole accuracy grade 8-9, so threaded bottom holes come out consistent enough to tap without rework.

You can order it in diameters from 12.5mm to 40mm, across 3×D, 5×D, 7×D and 10×D lengths. The tip swaps out in seconds, and the shank stays in the turret — which is where the cost savings come from once you're drilling more than a few hundred holes a week.

Highlights
Key Advantages
  • The tip-to-shank interface is self-locating, so a tip change takes seconds and seats the same way every time. No dialing in after each swap.
  • Grade 8-9 hole accuracy is what makes this drill worth it on threaded bottom holes — the minor diameter stays in tolerance, so taps don't bind or break.
  • The CDR-20-3D-C25 shank is built with enough core strength for 3×D through 10×D depths, so deep-hole jobs don't need a separate drill body.
  • You replace a tip, not the whole drill. On production runs that alone cuts tooling spend compared with solid carbide, and there's no waiting on a regrind.
  • Diameters 12.5-40mm in four length series cover most threaded-hole sizes without switching to a second drill family.
Use Cases
Applications
  • Threaded bottom holes that get tapped after drilling — the accuracy grade keeps minor diameters in spec
  • Automotive and general machinery parts drilled on CNC lathes or machining centers with a rear-locking holder
  • Mold and die work where hole position and size need to repeat from part to part
  • Energy and heavy equipment components drilled at 5×D to 10×D depths
  • Job shops running mixed batches that want one shank and a rack of tips instead of a drawer of solid carbide drills

FAQ
FAQ
Will this drill hold grade 8-9 in production, or is that only under ideal conditions?
Grade 8-9 is the working accuracy for threaded bottom hole machining with the CD2000 tip and CDR-20-3D-C25 shank. Actual results still depend on your holder, coolant supply and feed/speed settings, so we recommend a trial cut on your material before committing a full batch.
I drill a lot of tapped holes. What diameter should I pick?
Size the drill to the tap's minor diameter for the thread you're cutting. With the 12.5-40mm range covering most common metric threads, tell us the thread size and we'll confirm the drill diameter that leaves the right minor diameter for grade 8-9 tapping.
Can I run the CD2000 tip on a shank other than CDR-20-3D-C25?
The CD2000 is made for rear-locking crown drill shanks like the CDR-20-3D-C25. Other shanks may look similar but seat differently. Check with us before mixing tips and shanks.
How much do I actually save versus solid carbide?
The saving comes from replacing the tip only — the shank stays in the machine. On high-volume work that adds up quickly, and you skip regrind turnaround. For an exact comparison, send us your hole count and current tool cost.
What's the lead time?
It depends on diameter, length series and quantity. Common sizes usually ship from stock; less common ones are made to order. Send your list and we'll confirm current lead times.
Do you supply the rear-locking holder as well?
Ask us when you inquire. We can confirm holder compatibility for your machine interface so the shank and holder mate correctly from the first cut.
